Fire Protection Layers in Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling
Layered fire protection for lithium-ion battery recycling, including quarantine, detection, process isolation, local suppression, sprinklers, fire water and runoff control.

The Hazard Changes Throughout the Process
Battery receiving, quarantine, discharge, dismantling, shredding/separation and intermediate storage do not present the same fire risk. Damaged batteries or batteries with an unknown state of charge require particularly careful management during receiving and quarantine.
Protection Layers
- Quarantine and segregation of damaged batteries
- Temperature and off-gas monitoring
- Process and energy isolation
- Local detection/suppression for conveyors, shredders and machinery
- Building sprinkler system
- Fire-water and pump infrastructure
- Hydrants/monitors and emergency response
- Contaminated fire-water and runoff control
Emergency Response
Battery chemistry, storage quantity, process equipment and potential toxic/flammable gases should be addressed in the facility emergency-response plan. Temperature monitoring and re-ignition control should continue after intervention.
