Is a Suppression System Alone Enough for a BESS Container?
BESS fire safety requires layered protection: monitoring, off-gas detection, isolation, ventilation/deflagration measures, suppression, fire water and emergency response.
Short Answer: No
BESS fire safety cannot be reduced to one suppression system. Cell/BMS monitoring, off-gas detection, alarm, electrical isolation, ventilation and deflagration management, fire suppression and emergency response are interconnected protection layers.
Site Criteria Beyond the Container
- Exposure to adjacent units and separation distances
- Transformer and PCS equipment
- Fire-water, hydrant and/or monitor infrastructure
- Fire-service access and manoeuvring space
- Drainage and runoff control
- Emergency and return-to-service procedures
Test Evidence
Large-scale test methods such as UL 9540A provide data that can support project decisions on ESS thermal runaway, gas generation, fire propagation, deflagration and re-ignition behaviour. The tested configuration should be compared with the actual site arrangement.
