Cooling & Re-Ignition in Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
Why lithium-ion fire response must consider sustained cooling, thermal monitoring, propagation control and the possibility of re-ignition.

Why Extinguishing the Visible Flame May Not Be Enough
During thermal runaway, significant heat can remain stored within cells and adjacent modules. Even after visible flames disappear, internal reactions and heat transfer to neighbouring cells may continue.
Cooling and Monitoring
After intervention, battery-pack temperature should continue to be monitored for renewed temperature rise, smoke/off-gas generation or additional cell failure. Thermal imaging and suitable temperature-monitoring equipment can support the response.
Propagation Control
An important objective of the response strategy is to limit heat transfer to adjacent cells and modules, reduce the probability of re-ignition and control exposure to surrounding equipment or vehicles.
